Dying wool with Alkanet

The natural way to dye beautiful purples
broken image
A little Alkanet fun - and more detail. This yarn was pre-modanted merino in alum. However, please note that Jenny Dean advises that mordant is not necessary. I mordanted in symplocos purely by habit as I tend to mordant much of my fibre in symplocos in advance (apart from fibre that will be in a eucalypt dye), About 60-75% WOF is the suggested amount of alkanet. This is a hot dye.

Pictures show the difference in intensity between the first dye bath and the exhaust. Dip dyeing gives tonal variation.
